What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapy that helps people process difficult or traumatic experiences.
Instead of just talking about the past, EMDR helps the brain “re-file” painful memories so they no longer feel raw, overwhelming, or stuck.

How does EMDR Work?
When something very stressful or traumatic happens, the brain can struggle to process it. The memory can get “stuck” with all the painful feelings, thoughts, and body sensations attached.
In EMDR, the therapist guides you to briefly recall the memory while also doing something that stimulates both sides of the brain (like moving your eyes side to side, tapping, or listening to sounds).
This helps the brain reprocess the memory so it feels more like it’s in the past rather than being re-lived in the present.
What can EMDR help with?
EMDR is best known for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but it’s also helpful for:
-
Anxiety and panic
-
Depression
-
Phobias
-
Grief and loss
-
Low self-esteem
-
Stress from childhood experiences
-
Distress after accidents, injuries, or bullying
How can EMDR help?
-
Traumatic memories lose their strong emotional “charge.”
-
Physical stress reactions (racing heart, shaking, tight chest) reduce.
-
People feel calmer, more in control, and freer to move forward.
What is EMDR based on?
EMDR's effectiveness is based upon a model of understanding how the brain works called Adaptive Information Processing
(The AIP Model)
This is the theory behind EMDR. In simple terms:

-
Normally, the brain processes memories in a healthy way
-
Trauma disrupts this—the memory gets stuck with the same emotions, body sensations, and beliefs as when it first happened.
-
These “unprocessed” memories keep causing problems (flashbacks, nightmares, triggers).
-
EMDR helps the brain finish processing the memory and store it in a healthier way.

Think of it like a filing cabinet: everyday memories get filed neatly, but trauma leaves papers scattered on the desk. EMDR puts them away properly—you still remember what happened, but it no longer overwhelms you.
EMDR Online
Studies have shown that EMDR can be delivered safely and effectively online using secure video calls. I can guide eye movements or tapping through the screen. Research suggests online EMDR works well both in standard weekly formats and in intensive programmes.

This makes EMDR more accessible, especially for you if you:
-
Can’t easily travel to therapy
-
Live in remote areas
-
Need flexible scheduling
-
Prefer the comfort of your own home

For extra reassurance, I am further trained and certified as both an advanced Online & Telephone based Counsellor and Supervisor so am able to adapt the "in room" experience to an online platform.
EMDR Accredited support

I am Accredited as an EMDR Practitioner by the EMDR Association UK & Europe.

What this means is - that I have not only trained in EMDR but has also proved my skill and professionalism through extra practice, supervision, and assessment. It hopefully gives you as the client, reassurance that you will be in safe & experienced hands.
